Trustee Martina Mahaffey
My name is Martina Mahaffey, I am on the Board of Trustees for Public Library. I was raised in the Village of Phoenix, to longtime community serving parents. My father, Mr. Aubrey Lane Jr. was a Village Trustee and a member of the Phoenix Police Department. My mother, Mrs. Johnnie Lane, is the longest serving village official in the history of Phoenix. I have served as village clerk for over 40 years, having retired in 2020.
I have been a dedicated member of the Library Board for over 20 years. As the current President, we have been able to continue our long-standing traditions of providing exciting, quality, free programs for our life- long learners in the Village of Phoenix. Presently, I am the Senior Trustee for the Village of Phoenix and a Trustee at Daniel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. In my spare time, I enjoy being active in the lives of my children and grandchildry . That being said.
The safety of our residents is the number one priority for the Village of Phoenix. Leading the Phoenix Fire Department is Chief Kevin Betton. Chief Roy Wells heads our Police Department. Both have many years of experience and expertise that they share with the village. I thank them and their staff, for their commitment to our community and for helping to keep our residents safe. While Phoenix, continues to be one of the safest communities in the south suburbs, we can’t let our guard down to issues that surround us. Remember, if you see something, say something!
We are the eyes and ears of this community and we can keep it the hidden gem of the suburbs that we love. Warm weather and summer break will be upon soon and, our kids will be returning to outdoor play, a welcome site for many of us. I take this opportunity to remind us all to slow down behind the wheels of our vehicles. Speed bumps have been placed throughout the community to assist in this endeavor, however we still have those that choose to speed. Our officers are watching and will be issuing citations to those that choose to drive over the speed limit. The Cook County Dispatch Center receives our 9-1-1 calls. When calling, please be prepared to answer multiple questions as they are not familiar with our village.
For non-emergency calls, the Phoenix Police Department can be reached at 708-331-2192 until 7 p.m. and the Phoenix Fire Department can be reached at 708-331-2182. If you are the owner of a Kia or Hyundai vehicle, please stop by the Phoenix Police Department and pick up a free steering wheel lock. Locks have been made available to help curve the ongoing epidemic of stolen vehicles. Lastly, we have many dog owners throughout the village. Village ordinance requires that you purchase a dog tag and that you register your animal at the village hall. Please provide current shot records at the time of purchase. Your Public Safety Department is here to serve and protect our community. If you have any issues or concerns, please leave me a message at the village hall, 708- 331-2636 and I will return your call promptly. – Trustee Martina Mahaffey
